Voice: AI agents, browser calling & US texting
Voice brings calling and phone features into the same place as your contacts and automations. Build AI voice agents that hold real phone conversations, call contacts from the dashboard with the browser phone, register your business for US texting, and run automation calls that are tracked end to end. This guide covers each piece and how they connect.

What Voice is
A set of calling and phone features that live alongside your contacts and automations.
Speed to lead and follow-up calls win deals, but staffing phones is expensive, and texting from unregistered US numbers gets blocked by carriers. Voice handles the calling, the compliance checks and the registration in one place.
AI voice agents talk through stages and tools you define. The browser phone lets your team call contacts without leaving Mass. US texting registration gets your numbers approved to send texts. And Voice Call steps in automations are now logged, checked and retried automatically.
AI voice agents
Agents that answer an inbound number or place outbound calls from your automations.
An agent follows the stages you define and can use tools during the call. When it's ready, publish it to answer one of your inbound numbers, or use it to place outbound calls from your automations.
Voice agents are available once they have been enabled for your account.
- Book appointments — the agent can book an appointment during the call.
- Update contacts — details gathered on the call can be written back to the contact.
- Transfer the caller — hand the call to a person at your transfer number.
- End the call — the agent can close the conversation when it's done.
Starter and industry templates
Start from a ready-made agent filled in with your business details.
- Appointment setter — books appointments with callers and leads.
- Speed-to-lead — calls new leads quickly and books the appointment.
- Lead qualifier — qualifies leads over the phone.
- Database reactivation — reaches back out to contacts already in your database.
- Receptionist — answers inbound calls on one of your numbers.
- Missed-call callback — calls back people whose calls were missed.
- Review request — asks customers for a review.
- Industry packs — templates for real estate, home services, med spa, insurance and more.
Transfer numbers are always yours
Templates never ship with a transfer number. If an agent transfers calls, it can't be published until you enter your own.
Test, publish and restore
Talk to your agent before it goes live, and roll back to any published version.
- 1
Try it in the browser
Talk to your agent directly in the browser to hear how it handles the conversation.
- 2
Place a test call
Have the agent place a real test call to your phone before going live.
- 3
Publish
Every publish saves a version of the agent.
- 4
Restore if needed
Open version history to view an earlier version and copy it back into your draft.
Calls, stages and follow-up automations
Review every agent call and start an automation when one ends.
The calls list shows each agent call with its transcript, recording, outcome and the exact stages the conversation reached. Per-agent call stats show how each agent is performing.
The Voice agent call ended trigger starts an automation when an agent call ends. You can filter it by agent and by outcome — for example, to start a follow-up whenever a call ends with a specific result.
Usage and limits
Agent calls are billed by the minute, with monthly minute and concurrent-call limits.
If a limit is reached, callers reach a voicemail-style fallback instead of the agent.
Platform admins can turn voice agents on per account and set minute caps, concurrent calls, pricing and bring-your-own Vapi keys from Admin → Users.
Browser phone
Call contacts from the dashboard and keep every call on the contact record.
A phone icon in the dashboard header opens a dialer with a keypad, mute and a call timer. The Call button on a contact now dials in the app. Browser calls are billed per minute.
Each contact has a Calls tab that lists automated, inbound and in-app calls with their outcome and notes. An automation trigger fires when an in-app call ends, so you can follow up automatically.
- Dialer — keypad, mute and call timer from the header phone icon.
- Click-to-call — the contact Call button dials from the browser.
- Calls tab — automated, inbound and in-app calls with outcome and notes on each contact.
- Call completed trigger — start an automation when an in-app call ends.
US texting registration
Register your brand and campaign so texts from your US numbers are delivered.
- 1
Open Settings → Phone numbers
Start registration for your brand and campaign for US texting.
- 2
Track approval
Follow the approval status and any fees from the same page.
- 3
Resubmit if rejected
If a registration is rejected, you can resubmit it.
- 4
Numbers attach automatically
Once approved, your local numbers are attached automatically.
Tracked automation voice calls
Voice Call steps log every call and check compliance before dialing.
Voice Call steps in automations and the Canvas Place Call step log every call. Before calling, they check that the number is a US number, that the contact has given consent, that the number isn't on the opt-out list, and that it's within 8am–9pm calling hours. Recipients can press 9 to stop future calls.
Calls that are busy, unanswered or failed retry up to three times at the interval you set. If a retry falls outside the allowed calling hours, it moves to the next allowed calling window.
- US-only numbers — calls are placed only to US numbers.
- Consent and opt-outs — consent and the opt-out list are checked before every call.
- Calling hours — calls are placed between 8am and 9pm.
- Press 9 to stop — recipients can opt out of future calls during the call.
- Automatic retries — up to three retries for busy, unanswered or failed calls.
